Chimney Repairs in Laois
If You Can't Find the Leak, Check the Chimney First
A chimney is the most exposed and most stressed part of any roof. It's the one section that's taking a direct hit from wind, rain and frost from every angle, while also expanding and contracting through the year as it heats up and cools down — something the rest of the roof never has to deal with. It's no surprise it's usually the first thing to fail, and yet it's often the last place people check when a leak shows up.
We get called out regularly to chimney problems that have already been "fixed" once or twice before — a bit of sealant pushed into a crack, a quick smear of mortar over a gap — none of which actually solves anything.
The junction between a chimney and a roof needs to be properly flashed and properly pointed, and if either of those has failed, no amount of sealant from a tube is going to hold for long.
We carry out chimney repairs across the full county — Portlaoise, Portarlington, Mountmellick, Abbeyleix, Stradbally, Mountrath, Rathdowney and the areas around them. We know what to look for, and we fix the actual problem rather than the symptom of it.

Why a Chimney Leak Is So Often Misdiagnosed
A leak near a chimney almost never announces itself clearly. Water can enter at the flashing, track down inside the stack itself, and show up as a damp patch on a bedroom ceiling several feet away from the chimney — which is exactly why so many chimney leaks get treated as a roof tile problem, fixed in the wrong place, and come straight back the following winter.
The mortar and brickwork on a chimney stack are also doing more work than people assume. Every freeze-thaw cycle through an Irish winter opens up tiny cracks in old mortar that wasn't an issue the year before, and those cracks widen a little more each season until eventually they're letting water straight through.
By the time you can see daylight through a gap in the pointing, water has likely been getting in for several winters already.
This is why a chimney that "looks fine from the ground" can still be the source of a leak that's been blamed on everything else first.

Signs Your Chimney Needs Attention
A chimney problem rarely announces itself with an obvious bang — it builds quietly until it's a much bigger job than it needed to be. Watch for mortar joints that look crumbly, powdery or have visible gaps when viewed up close, since this is usually the first sign that repointing is overdue.
A white, powdery residue on the brickwork (known as efflorescence) is a sign that moisture is getting into the masonry and working its way back out, which means water is already getting past the surface.
~Look out for damp patches on a chimney breast wall inside the house, even ones that come and go depending on rainfall, since intermittent dampness is often worse than constant dampness — it usually means water is finding a path through during heavy rain and drying out between spells.
And if you can see daylight or gaps around the base of the chimney from inside the attic, that's a clear sign the flashing has failed and needs attention before the next bout of heavy rain gets through. None of these need to be dealt with in a panic, but all of them get more expensive the longer they're left unattended.
Chimney Repair Questions From Laois Homeowners
Look at where the damp patch sits relative to the chimney. If it's near or below the chimney breast, even if it's not directly underneath the stack, that's a strong indicator. Water can also travel along a flue or down the inside of a stack before showing up at ceiling level, so don't rule the chimney out just because the stain isn't directly beneath it.
It depends on how much of the mortar has failed. A small section can often be done in half a day. A chimney that needs repointing across its full height, or where multiple sides have deteriorated, takes longer and may need scaffolding depending on the height and access.
Sealant is a temporary measure, not a permanent fix. It can buy time on a small gap, but it degrades with UV exposure and movement far faster than properly fitted lead flashing, and it was never designed to be the long-term solution for a chimney-to-roof junction.
Often, yes, at least around the base of the chimney where the flashing meets the roof covering. We replace and reset those tiles or slates correctly as part of the job rather than leaving the area disturbed.
Yes. An unused chimney is just as exposed to the weather as one that's in use, and a disused stack that's neglected can deteriorate to the point of becoming unsafe. If you're not using it, removal or a properly fitted cap is usually a better long-term option than leaving it as is.
Yes. Water getting in around a chimney doesn't stay contained to that one area — it can track along rafters and battens, affecting timber and felt well beyond the chimney itself if it's left unaddressed for long enough.
