Signs Your Chimney Needs Attention
A chimney problem rarely announces itself with an obvious bang — it builds quietly until it's a much bigger job than it needed to be. Watch for mortar joints that look crumbly, powdery or have visible gaps when viewed up close, since this is usually the first sign that repointing is overdue.
A white, powdery residue on the brickwork (known as efflorescence) is a sign that moisture is getting into the masonry and working its way back out, which means water is already getting past the surface.
~Look out for damp patches on a chimney breast wall inside the house, even ones that come and go depending on rainfall, since intermittent dampness is often worse than constant dampness — it usually means water is finding a path through during heavy rain and drying out between spells.
And if you can see daylight or gaps around the base of the chimney from inside the attic, that's a clear sign the flashing has failed and needs attention before the next bout of heavy rain gets through. None of these need to be dealt with in a panic, but all of them get more expensive the longer they're left unattended.
